The Hilux is Australia's top-selling vehicle and one of the most common cars in our workshop. Most customers bring it in for one of three things: more towing confidence on the highway, better real-world fuel economy on long runs, or recovering the power that's quietly disappeared under DPF and EGR carbon build-up at high mileage. The 2.8 L 1GD-FTV in particular has strong factory hardware that the OEM map never fully exploits — careful fuelling and boost calibration on the dyno consistently unlocks both meaningful power and a noticeably more relaxed cruise.
The 2.8 L 4-cylinder in the Toyota Hilux is a performance diesel — high injection pressure, a variable-geometry or twin turbocharger, and a tight calibration that was set for global emissions targets rather than for what the engine can actually sustain. That's the gap a custom dyno-developed map closes: not more hardware, just a calibration that matches the engine's real capability.
Our dyno-developed map for the Toyota Hilux adds an average of 26 kW (25%) at the wheels and 138 Nm (25%) of engine torque. At this level the car genuinely changes character — overtaking on single-lane highways stops being a commitment, and the mid-range pull from around 1,500 to 3,000 rpm is transformed. You notice it most on the highway on-ramp and in the first third of an overtake.
In practical terms, that works out to around 7 fewer tanks of diesel over 40,000 km. At a typical 15,000 km annual mileage, most Toyota Hilux owners save roughly 182 L and $328 per year at the pump — purely from improved combustion efficiency at part-throttle, where diesels spend most of their time.
This Toyota Hilux variant ran from 2023–2025. The factory calibration changed very little across that production window; we have the original file for each year and always confirm which one matches the car in front of us before we start.
Toyota 1GD-FTV
The 2.8 L 1GD-FTV replaced the 1KD on the Hilux, Prado and Fortuner. It came with a tighter factory map for emissions compliance, which leaves real headroom for a careful remap — most owners feel the difference immediately on the throttle.
